The oil boom in Canada in 2003 to 2008 had a great impact on cities in Alberta, such as Edmonton. Declining numbers of inhabitants leave the city now with an excess of housing and urban sprawl. The greatest challenge however is probably to move from a resource-driven to a diverse knowledge-based economy. Despite the difficult economic situation residents stress the tolerance and solidarity among the local population.
