New York state to allow autonomous vehicle testing

The state of New York will now allow the testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads. “We are taking a careful yet balanced approach to incorporating autonomous vehicles on our roads to reduce dangerous driving habits, decrease the number of accidents and save lives on New York roadways,” Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York said in a statement. New York has already started to accept applications from the interested companies. There are expected to be a few hurdles for the companies as well given the operating conditions of a $5 million insurance and state police oversight over the operations along with a report submission to the state for the tests conducted. New York City is also adding street lights throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn with an ability to connect to vehicles wirelessly. In an effort to properly understand the connected technology, up to 8000 different vehicles are also being equipped with technologies which will allow them to communicate with each other.
