Established last year, the Norwegian Forum For Autonomous Ships (NFAS), a collaboration between the Norwegian Maritime Authority and the Norwegian Coastal Admininistration, is testing autonomous electric ships to replace trucks. Their job is to “facilitate the testing of fully or partly unmanned vessels and to exchange experience and data to facilitate the development and use of such vehicles.”

While trucks contribute to congestion, fill up highways, and are mostly powered by polluting diesel engines, the ships can be built small and lightweight because they do not have to accomodate any humans. They are easily rechargeable while in port, and fit ideally into Norway’s extensive coastal shipping network, but could be a solution to transportation problem all around the world.
