Metropolis Farms has constructed a 500 kilowatt solar array out of about 2000 solar panels on a roof in Philadelphia. Underneath that roof the company is developing the world’s first solar powered indoor vertical farm. On less than 100,000 sq feet of space, as much crops will be grown as could be on 660 acres of outdoor farms.

“The panels are already installed and turned on, now we’re building out the farm. The first crops will be planted in November,” the company says.

Additionally, the vertical farm will use dramatically fewer pesticides.
