The Chinese province of Qinghai did a test run, according to news outlet Xinhua, providing 100% renewable energies for an entire week for the whole province. The State Grid Corporation of China did this as part of a trial that aimed to test the long-term viability of relying on renewable energie sources. During that time, the Qinghai province generated 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of energy for over 5.6 million residents. The largest share of the renewables came from hydropower, which contributed to about 72% of the electricity generated thoughout the one-week tesat run. By 2020, the province plans to expand its clean energy capacity to 35 million kilowatts, which could supply 110 billion kWh of renewable energy annually. Until 2030, China hopes to produce 20% of its energy from renewable sources.

But not just China is making efforts in trying to become less dependent of fossil energy source, Austria’s largest state is currently also getting all of its power from solar, wind, and hydropower.
