Solar becomes cheaper rapidly as component prices shrink

A report from GTM Research predicts that average global solar prices will drop by 27 percent by 2022. Solar prices have been falling for a while, but a new solar PV system pricing forecast finds that this no longer just driven by decreases in the price of modules, but inverters, trackers and labor costs becoming less expensive. “Component prices are beginning to lose their price variance from country to country,” says GTM Research Solar Analyst Ben Gallagher. “Beyond a handful of local content requirements, many of the policies that created regional hardware pricing have been eroded by market forces.”

India, for example, prices for utility-scale solar PV systems have gone down to ridiculous 65 cents per watt. Overall, every region is expected to benefit.
