The House of Representatives has passed legislation named the Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research In Vehicle Evolution Act, marketed to the public as the SELF DRIVE act. It allows car manufacturers to test 100,000 autonomous cars on public roads across the US, even without meeting safety standards.

The legislation had major support from the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, a lobbying group consisting of companies engaged with the design of autonomous vehicles such as Ford, Lyft, Uber, Volvo Group and Waymo.

“Self-driving vehicles offer an opportunity to significantly increase safety, improve transportation access for underserved communities, and transform how people, goods and services get from point A to B,” general counsel of the group, David Strickland, said.
