Shoes made from ocean waste; small steps in plastic pollution prevention

Adidas has taken steps in helping to prevent pollution of oceans by upcycling plastic retrieved from a clean-up action in the Maldives. The famous shoe manufacturer has commited to producing a million pair of shoes made from plastic ocean waste. But Adidas is not the only company reusing and upcycling old plastic garbage to design fashion. The Spanish clothing company Ecoalf works together with fishermen that collect deep-sea plastic waste alongside their daily catch; whereas Subs, a New Zealand based flip-flops company reuses old shoes and plastic waste for their products.

Surely, this is only a small step in reacting towards the 12.7 million tons of plastic waste that enters oceans every year, especially considering the fact that the average sea depth is 1.2 km, meaning that deep-sea plastic retrieval is almost unmanageable. Nevertheless, the commitment of large companies to the issues of plastic pollution is an important feature to raise awareness for sustainability.
