Student team powers bus with formic acid

Team FAST, a group of students at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands today revealed what is celebrated as the world’s first system that allows a bus to drive on formic acid. Their electric bus is connected to a trailer that transforms that formic acid into electricity.

Formic acid as a compound is sustainable, carbon neutral, safe, and liquid, everything you want in a fuel. The team calls its fuel Hydrozine, and it has four times the energy density of a battery. The innovative system they created is 42,000 times stronger than even they originally planned, and is now able to produce 25kW of power. What is more, formic acid is easily manufactured at an industrial level.

The bus will be operational by the end of 2017.
