“What makes urban food policy happen?”, a new report from the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, presents five case studies from all over the world to show how nutrition-related challenges can be tackled by municipalities. For a long time, governments shaped food policy, but the report shows that municipalities are the leading force in many countries. “First and foremost,” the report urges, look “at the services that the city already delivers to see how the food policy can be incorporated for little additional cost by changing working practices.”

Belo Horizonte, Brazil,created a dedicated food agency to foster citywide access to high-quality, healthy and safe food. Nairobi, Kenya, and Detroit are encouraging and promoting small farms within the city. Amsterdam includes include anti-obesity strategies in all their agencies, and Toronto strengthens urban-rural alliances with the Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Action Plan.
