In a national referendum, Swiss citizens have voted to put a complete end to any new nuclear power plants. The citizens voted to develop renewable energy capacities and reduction in the power consumption by increasing energy efficiency. The Energy Strategy 2050 has already been approved by Parliament last year. Out of 42% of the Swiss population who turned out to vote, 58.2% of the vote were cast to end the nuclear energy. Swiss Energy Minister Doris Leuthard said, “After six years of debate in parliament and at committee level, a new chapter in Switzerland’s energy policy can begin, but there is still a lot of work to do.” Switzerland aims to generate about 11,400GWh by 2035 from renewable sources excluding hydropower. However, the hydropower capacity generation is expected to be 37,400 GWh by 2035.
