Technology is key in updating traditional industries such as agriculture and waste management to a sustainable status. Innovative projects and start-ups in Asia are tailored to the needs of economies, and thus allow them to leapfrog linear development and grow in a way that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

For example, start-up eFishery has developed an Internet-of-Things-driven, automatic fish feeder of the same name that makes up 70-90 percent of operating costs for users. With eFishery, one adjusts the frequency and amount of fish feed, and through algorithms depending on the species of fish, eFishery detects when fish require no more feeding, stopping the problem of overfeeding.

Recycling company Banyan Nation has integrated the informal sector as one source of plastic waste and offers wages that are fair and unusual benefits for the informal sector. With their unique plastic cleaning technology, they manage to meet performance and quality standards of customers, and contribute to a healthier environment.

Another project by Olam helps farmers become more productive and financially responsible with the Olam Farmer Information System (OFIS) mobile app.
