In the framework of A World Bridge (AWB), a program of NASA and Trillium Learning, teens are helping to develop a smart city platform called CitySmart to keep track of rescources such as renewable energy, water and electricity in order for government staff to identify problems in their infrastructure. Students are taught to code and are working with NASA researchers remotely, either from school or from home.
The projects have actual deadlines, budgets, and oversight, and therefore teach the teens to work with real-world problems on a professional level. The project shows that raising awareness for local issues having global repercussions can also enhance problem-solving and solution-building skills of students all over the world.
