An umbrella group of urban constituencies known as the General Assembly of Partners (GAP) is pressing the issue of a needed response to rapid urbanization. They are suggesting the United Nations to copy mechanisms set up decades ago to combat global climate change.
The pressure by the group of civil society representatives follows a panel of experts recommending the creation of a first-ever global body to coordinate international urbanization, UN Urban.
“Global governance of urbanisation is as urgent now as was the establishment of global governance of climate change and environmental issues thirty years ago,” a statement by the GAP reads.
