Volkswagen to make traffic safer with pWLAN technology from 2019

Volkswagen is planning to equip their first models with IEEE 802.11p (pWLAN) as a standard as a tool for vehicles to communicate with other vehicles or the transport infrastructure. This is particularly useful for the exchange of information relevant to traffic between cars made by different manufacturers.

When traffic situation, accidents and other situations relating to traffic conditions are shared, cars can virtually look around the corner to identify  potential traffic hazards and prevent further accidens. “We want to increase road safety with the aid of networked vehicles, and the most efficient way of achieving this is through the rapid roll-out of a common technology. What matters most is that the technology is used consistently, and by as many manufacturers and partners as possible,” Johannes Neft, Head of Vehicle Body Development for the Volkswagen brand, says.
