World’s largest ocean research vessel to be funded by Norwegian billionaire

The World Wildlife Fund has partnered with the Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke  to build a Research Expedition Vessel (REV), the world’s largest superyacht. Scheduled to be completed by mid 2020, and at 596 feet, it surpasses the size of any other privately owned vessel afloat. Vard shipyard in Norway will be responsible to build the ship and it will be used by the scientists to conduct research on the oceans and ocean animals. Powered by hybrid power with a combination of a 5-bladed controllable pitch propellers optimized for quiet operation, the ship will be equipped with state-of-the art laboratories, and communication systems. A high-tech waste management system along with noise redcution, ballast water treatment and LED lighting makes up to be the additional features of the ship. With a capacity to accomodate 90 to 100 passengers, it boasts of a top speed of 17 knots with a range of 2,300 nautical miles and a capacity to carry food for 114 days.
