According to a new report, there is a great potential to electrify mining activities. Image source: Shutterstock (#532944502).
A report published by Sunshine for Mines, a Rocky Mountain Institute Carbon War Room program that facilitates the adoption of renewables for mines and aims to reach a total of 8 GW of renewable capacity in the ground for mines by 2025 reveals that an opportunity has arisen to decarbonize the global mining industry.
Entitled Toward Sustainable Mining, the report states that with current technology costs, every mining function except trucking can be electrified.
Should this hold true, extraction of natural resource commodities does not have to be stopped for a sustainable economy, but just made more efficient.
