More than 700 companies stopped their production in Beijing, hospitals prepare for surge in pollution-related illnesses and the traffic police restricted drivers by monitoring their plates in order to reduce pollution during a national smog red alert. The severe pollution is blamed on its reliance on coal and emissions caused by older cars.
