National Grid and UK Power Networks have announced a project that is aimed at reducing expenses for renewables connecting to the grid across the South East of England. The region combines existing renewable energy generation, a nuclear power station and interconnecting cables to Europe, making it very dynamic, but also making management a complex challenge for the transmission and distribution network companies.

Now a new framework was developed to connect electricity generators to the grid more easily and without building expensive reinforcement assets on the transmission networks. “The role of the distribution networks is changing, and we need to work closely with the national transmission network operator to deliver cost-effective solutions,” said Sotiris Georgiopoulos, head of smart grid at UK Power Networks.
