Opposition parties in the UK are urging the government to introduce a money-back return scheme for plastic bottles to deal with the enormous amounts of waste created every week. Experts state that a deposit return scheme would reduce the number of plastic bottles in streets and seas dramatically, as shown by countries such as Germany, Norway and Sweden, where 90 percent of bottles are recycled. In comparison, Britain just recycles 59 percent.

Now that the industry, Coca-Cola in particular, has said it would support such a scheme, it seems more likely to be established.

“A deposit return scheme would have widespread public support and would go a long way to ensuring that we recycle as much of our waste as possible,” said Sue Hayman, Labour’s shadow environment secretary.
